The real story: The Battle of the Atlantic raged from 1939 to 1945. Allied convoys lost more than 3,500 merchant ships and 175 warships. But the U-boat fleet lost 783 submarines and 30,000 of 39,000 sailors — the highest casualty rate of any service in WWII.
The SS Jeremiah O'Brien — the ship you're sleeping on tonight — was a Liberty ship just like those in this convoy. Built in 1943, she crossed the Atlantic, supported the D-Day landings at Normandy, and survived the war.
